Upcoming Events - March & April 2012

Divas and Gaymers and Bears, oh my! Everyone's getting out of their post-holiday schlump and suddenly there's events springing up all over the place! The personas got together to list out their picks. If you like being surrounded by the sound of belting divas, or by manly men dressed in rubber, or by hoards upon hoards of geeks, nerds, and gamers... there's something upcoming to look forward to.

FILIPINA COLADA'S PICKS

Broadway diva Julia Murney graces the Orpheum stage for Wicked Divas with the Vancouver Symphony (Mar 2-3). Joined by fellow Wicked veteran Emily Rozek, they will be singing arrangements from Ragtime, Evita, and of course, Wicked. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Murney's sizzling performance as Queenie in the original The Wild Party [Lippa]. Can't wait to see her raise the roof and bring the house down!

Vancouver Opera gets busy over the next two months with their closing shows for the season. Up first is Barber of Seville, the only show this season that doesn't end with a romantic tragedy! Instead, it's full of delicious disguises and costume changes (Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Mar 17-25). Closing the season will be a very grand Aida (Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Apr 21-May 3). Be sure to check out our interview with company manager Adrianne Wurz about what's in store (including, well... me! I'm going to be in Aida!).

SNAPDRAGON'S PICKS
The Orpheum will once again be experiencing a different crowd than usual... gamers! (And yes, definitely a whole schwack of gaymers.) Videogame scores played by full symphony orchestras is a trend that has slowly been gaining momentum, and Nintendo finally joins the bandwagon with The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses (March 14). Mainly targeted at devoted fans of the series, the night will include a wide selection from each game in the series.

It came out of nowhere. Slowly across the lower mainland, you could hear the sounds of geeks and nerds rejoicing. Vancouver has a mixed track record when it comes to geek conventions. That might all change this year, as Fan Expo Vancouver is making its way to the Vancouver Convention Centre (April 21-22). The original Fan Expo Canada, based out of Toronto, is the largest multi-genre fan convention in Canada. Looks like cosplayers are going to have loads to look forward to on the west coast this year! Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing Kristin Bauer (Pam) from True Blood. And yes, I totally had a crush on Kevin Sorbo back from the Hercules days... I even had the action figure. My biggest hope... people better remember to bathe! This ain't PAX, people!

SWEET CHERRIBUM'S PICKS
Amazingly talented and dear friend to the Sisters, artist John Ferrie opens his latest exhibition Physical Graffiti at the Main Space Gallery (Mar 1-15). With vibrant, bold splashes of colour in his own distinctive, unique style, John's newest paintings capture the life, the joy, and the spirit of the city of Vancouver. No wonder the Sisters love him so much!

And we may not have a hunky Jesus contest, but the Sisters are definitely going to have one crazy Easter Weekend this year! Led by the fabulous Alma Bitches, the Sisters are going to be doing a special performance at Vancouver's hottest new bear party, Ruff (Club 560, April 5). And this will be coinciding with a whole weekend of rubber-lovin' for the 21st Rubbout (various locations, April 5-8). Amidst the sights and smells of delicious rubber and manly men, be on the lookout for our fabulous wimples. The Sisters will be out spreading love and joy!
